Honoring Those Who Served: Hospice Care for Veterans

By Cindy Curry3 min read

When a veteran nears the end of life, their journey carries the significant weight of service, sacrifice, and unique experiences. At Cairo Hospice, we understand that those who wore the uniform deserve care that honors their service and respects their unique physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Good veteran care at the end of life aims for comfort, dignity, and peace. It recognizes both a veteran's courage and their humanity.

The Necessity of Veteran-Specific End-of-Life Care

Veterans often encounter distinct challenges at the end of life. These can stem from service-related injuries, chronic health issues, or emotional experiences linked to their military time. Many carry memories or physical reminders that can resurface as health declines. Hospice care that takes military history into account helps address these realities with respect.

  • Military-Sensitive Approach: A hospice team that asks about military service can better understand the impact of experiences like combat, captivity, or military culture.
  • Integrating Respect and Clinical Care: Pairing good clinical care with an appreciation for military life can help veterans find comfort, resolution, and peace during their final chapter.

A Commitment Woven into Our Structure

As a veteran-owned organization, Cairo Hospice has a personal commitment to those who have served.

We Honor Veterans is a national program that helps hospice providers meet the needs of veterans and their families. It offers training and resources on topics like:

  • Respectful Inquiry: Asking about a person's military service and listening to what it meant to them.
  • Recognition: Ideas for recognition events and pinning ceremonies that honor a veteran's service.
  • Working with the VA: Involving the Department of Veterans Affairs in care planning early.

Connection, Recognition, and Support

Connection and recognition are vital components of healing and peace.

  • Veteran-to-Veteran Companionship: Many hospices invite veteran volunteers to visit veteran patients. A fellow service member can offer companionship and an easy, knowing kind of conversation.
  • Honor Ceremonies: A simple recognition, such as a bedside salute or a pinning ceremony with family, can confirm that a veteran's service mattered and still matters.

Ask our team which veteran recognition and volunteer options are available in your area.

Understanding Benefits and Care

The VA system can be hard to sort out, especially during a serious illness. According to the VA, hospice care is part of the VHA Standard Medical Benefits Package. All enrolled veterans who meet the clinical need are eligible, and there are no copays for VA hospice care, whether the VA provides it or an organization with a VA contract does.

Our team can help veterans and their families with questions about:

  • Service-connected benefits.
  • Coordinating with VA facilities.
  • Local veteran organizations that offer extra resources.

Our goal is care that feels respectful and easy to understand, including costs.

Providing Trauma-Informed Emotional Safety

For some veterans, the end of life can trigger emotional challenges such as PTSD or unresolved trauma. Certain sounds, images, or even medical routines can bring back difficult memories. Trauma-informed care aims to avoid retraumatization and help a veteran feel safe.

Nurses, social workers, and chaplains can watch for signs of distress and adjust care routines to meet each veteran's needs. That might mean changing the timing of a routine, offering counseling, or simply keeping the room quiet and calm. The goal is always peace for both body and mind.

Requesting Care for Your Loved One

If your loved one is a veteran, you can contact Cairo Hospice at any time for a free consultation. To qualify for hospice, a doctor certifies a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its normal course, and the patient chooses comfort care instead of curative treatment for that illness.

Our team can help you understand eligibility, coordinate with the VA if needed, and build a care plan that honors your loved one's service, values, and preferences.

Cairo Hospice serves veterans and their families across Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. We're available by phone 24/7 and accept Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and private pay.

We believe every veteran deserves to finish their life's journey with dignity, respect, and unwavering dedication to their comfort and peace.
